Exhibitions - From The Vault

FROM THE VAULT

Dates: December 3 - December 31, 2015

Buckshot Gallery is pleased to announce “From The Vault”, a group exhibition focusing on rare, sold out or closed editions from the artists’ private archives.

Exhibited together for the first time, the photographs by Estevan Oriol and the colorful graffiti pieces by Risk and Axis explore the connective tissue of family, street culture and a love of their mediums of choice.

Although fundamentally different in style, these works are highly instinctual while revealing a great ability to capture fleeting moments of intimacy.

“From the Vault” is a treasury of moments derived from interactions with family, socio-critical observations and everyday life. Estevan, Risk and AXIS all share a sensibility in how they establish an emotional rapport with their subjects and subsequently with the viewer. Connected by a shared interest in the wildly imaginative nature of storytelling and the visual fusion of color and thought provoking statements in a narrative context, all three artists look to the graffiti and street art culture as a primary source of inspiration.

Kelly Graval, the multi-talented fine artist, illustrator, and graffiti artist known as RISK, has been synonymous with the Los Angeles art community for decades. With a career spanning 30 years, RISK has solidified his place in the history books as a world renowned graffiti legend.

Estevan Oriol is a Mexican American photographer and director based in Los Angeles, California. His work has been featured in numerous magazines as it usually reflects Los Angeles urban and gang culture. Throughout the years he has worked with many celebrities, including Eminem, Kim Kardashian, Cypress Hill, Dennis Hopper, Forest Whitaker, Adrien Brody, 50 Cent and Danny Trejo to name a few. He is also known for directing several music videos as well as for his partnership with Mister Cartoon for Joker Brand Clothing. Estevan is affiliated with Soul Assassins.

London-born American painter and illustrator AXIS is best known for his hyper-stylized freehand graffiti, which he first exposed on the streets of Los Angeles in the late 80s. Today his work is exhibited in galleries and museums around the world. By the mid 90s, the craftsmanship he displayed in public murals redefined what artists could do with spray paint and cemented his reputation as a revered figure in the Los Angeles art community.

In conjunction with our exhibition, Buckshot Gallery will be hosting a book signing event this Saturday, December 12 from 3 - 5PM with Estevan Oriol and Risk, followed by a live painting event next Saturday, December 19 from 3 -5PM with Risk and AXIS.
